What is family mold?
Plastic mold is used for making plastic product automatically, the plastic material is injected into the cavity of the mold and it cooled and harden inside the mold and get the shape of the cavity. This is process is called plastic injection molding, which is a economical way to mass produce the plastic parts. Generally, the plastic mold has many cavities to manufacture one single same plastic part, however, the plastic mold can manufacture different plastic parts which is called family mold.
Family mold has at least two different cavities which could make different parts in same material, or different material if we add the switch to control the runner. Compare with multi cavities mold, family mold has its pros and cons.
The pros
1. Saving the mold cost
Family mold combines two or more different plastic part in one mold, which could reduce the number of new molds.
2. Efficient production
We can make different plastic parts by using one mold and one machine, which is much more efficient than the multi cavities mold.
The cons
1. Higher product price
Although family mold could save the mold cost, but the cost to manufacture the products will be higher than multi cavities mold.
2. Unbalanced filled
The cavities inside the family mold is not identical, so the filling will not be balanced in the process of injection molding. Some cavities is over filled and the others are still short shot. It will be a big challenge for the injection molder to get the ideal products.
Summary, both multi cavities mold and family mold have its own pros and cons. The mold buyer should make the choice depending on the project budget and total annual demand. The multi cavities mold is suitable for the mature product which already has a high volume market demand. And the family is more suitable for the new project and starters.
