Some common plastic materials for injection molding.
There are thousands of plastic materials on market nowadays. However, only a few kinds of plastic materials cover all our daily used products. Here we introduce some common plastic materials we used for injection molding.
ABS
ABS is a plastic alloy material combined by acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. This plastic alloy gets the merits of the three materials, make ABS material a tough, strong, impact resistant and temperature resistant material. ABS is widely used on many industries, from automobile to household products, from electrical products to home appliance.
ABS is easy molded and provide a high quality surface. It can be made in different colors with different surface treatment. ABS is easy to be metal coated, which could get a shiny metal like surface effect. ABS is mostly used for chrome plated products like the shower head, automobile trim, other household products which need shiny metal like surface.
ABS is not chemical resistant and UV resistant.
Polypropylene
Polypropylene is mostly used on food and beverage packages. The food and beverage container, cover, bottle, cap are made by food grade PP material, due to its chemical resistance, elasticity and toughness. PP can be made transparent or a high glossy surface. PP material is also a quite competitive material.
PP could also be customized by adding special additives, it is call engineering PP material. Engineered PP material could be used in automotive industrial and home appliance products.
PP is not UV resistant and anti-flammable.
POM
POM provides good toughness, chemical resistance, good heat distortion and great mechanical property. POM is known for its strong mechanical character, it is generally used for making plastic gears and bearings as the replacements for metals.
POM is not heat resistant and UV resistant.
Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate can be took as a higher grade ABS material. PC has higher impact resistance, heat resistance and more durable than ABS. PC could be a replacement for ABS for the product which has a high requirement on the material. PC also has a good light transmission property. It could be applied to eyewear lenses and optical instrument.
PC is much expensive than ABS, the higher price limit the range of PC usage.
